(Gonna tell you a sad story...) Well I woke up this morning, as near as I could tell, I wasn't real sick but I wasn't quite well. Ran to the doctor, said "help me please!" He looked me over from my head to my knees. He shook his head and he said "Oh my! Too old to boogie, and too young to die". Chorus: Too old to boogie (That's what he said) Too young to die (I might as well be dead) He said "you can't do either one, so don't even try..." You're too old to boogie, too young to die. Well. I went to see my baby, she's my heart's delight, Told her all my troubles, said it just wasn't right... Said "Come on baby, grab your dancing shoes; I need to rock away these old-man blues." She shook her head with a tear in her eye, Said "You're too old to boogie, too young to die". Chorus: Too old to boogie, (Oh, give it to me straight, now) Too young to die (I don't feel so great!) Don't say it too loud, you might make me cry.... I'm too old to boogie, too young to die. Too old to boogie, (Oh, that's for sure) Too young to die (You know, there ain't no cure) Everybody says it, I guess they wouldn't lie.... I'm too old to boogie, too old to boogie, too old to boogie, too young to die. (Oh man, I need a nap!)

Checkin' out of Calgary, leavin' it far behind. Prairies are just a memory, easing out of my mind. You know I haven't seen my home Lord since I don't know when hmmmm, On my way again. Pockets are kind of empty you could say the same about my heart. Put my guitar upon my back, it's time to make a brand new start. I've been in many a lonesome town, I stay about a week and then, hmmm On my way again. You know I miss my hometown, mountains reaching up to the sky Got me a woman in Montreal, I'll think about her by and by I'm going back to find her, lord I couldn't tell you when, Hmmm, I'm on my way again.

Well, halfway through my second pitcher, fallin' in and out of trouble Tryin' to work my nerve up to go home. Another round or maybe two and I'll be seeing double That's ok, I hate to drink alone Chorus: No one can understand the incredible drinkin' man Tell him by his achin' heart and his shakin' hand No one can understand the incredible drinkin' man I am, step right up and see him while you can. There's a honky-tonk round every corner, Lord, I've seen them all There ain't that much to say about a barstool; Set 'em up, I'll knock em back, watch a good man fall; Reflections in the bottle shows me a fool (Chorus) Closin' time, headin' home, tryin' to find my pride Guess I lost it somewhere along the way. It don't take long to kill the body when the soul's already died, I wonder, can it live one more day.... Chorus: No one can understand the incredible drinkin' man Tell him by his achin' heart and his shakin' hand No one can understand the incredible drinkin' man I am, step right up and see him while you can. Lord, I am, step right up and see him while you can.

You're leaving me again just like a hundred times before The way you always swore you'd never do, And I know that I'll forgive you when you walk back through that door I guess I must be used to losing you. Refrain: Does goodbye always follow I love you - Is that the way that love's supposed to be? Does goodbye always follow I love you - Why oh why do you keep leaving me? I've tried so hard to please you, you're still not satisfied; I guess that's just the way you'll always be Someday you're going to find out how it feels to lose your pride When you get hurt the way you're hurting me. Refrain: Well, does goodbye always follow I love you - Is that the way that love's supposed to be? Does goodbye always follow I love you - Why oh why do you keep leaving me? Well, why oh why do you keep leaving me?

Poor Company 03:26
I’ve been high all night long, trying to hide my feelings in a song, Coming up with all kinds of wrong things to say, One more room all alone, I’m drunk and lonely to the bone, Lord it’s 3 A.M. and I just forgot how to pray. Chorus: When I get to drinkin’, to keep myself from thinkin’, You wouldn’t want to know me, I’m poor company. Livin’ from a glass just ain’t right, seems I’m gettin’ lower every night, I wish these whiskey chains would set me free, I don’t know why I left you and then, I had to choose a barstool for my friend, But I guess the Lord needs a few bad examples like me. (chorus) That’s my last quarter now it’s gone, jukebox play me a goodnight song, Maybe I can sleep if I just have one more round, Waitress come and sit here by me I shouldn’t be alone in my misery, You may be the last to watch a good man goin’ down. Chorus: When I get to drinkin’, to keep myself from thinkin’, You wouldn’t want to know me, I’m poor company. You wouldn’t want to know me, I’m poor company.

Billy turned 60 just the other day He's got a few wrinkles, his hair's turnin' grey But he plays every night with a 4-piece band - Yeah, Billy's the original rock'n roll man. Chorus: Billy's gotta rock, Billy's gotta roll, Billy plays country, plays it with soul Don't try to tell him that he's too old - Billy's gotta rock, Billy's gotta roll. He plays for the money, he plays for the beer, He'll play any song that you want to hear. Sometimes his old fingers get to movin' kind of slow, A couple more drinks, he's ready to go Chorus: Billy's gotta rock, Billy's gotta roll, Billy plays country, plays it with soul Don't try to tell him that he's too old - Billy's gotta rock, Billy's gotta roll. Come on, Billy! Young people won't come to see Billy play, They say he's just a relic from the olden days. The kids don't know, but they oughtta be told, Billy's generation invented rock 'n roll! Chorus: Billy's gotta rock, Billy's gotta roll, Billy plays country, plays it with soul Don't try to tell him that he's too old - Billy's gotta rock, Billy's gotta roll. He's gotta rock, yeah, he's gotta roll...

I remember a time when love was sweeter, Now, why can’t things be the way they used to be? Holding a girl on the dance floor was thrilling, or so it seemed to me. Chorus: And I still like to make love in 3/4 time, when I hear a waltz it sets me free, I still like to make love in 3/4 time, so please save a slow one for me. Would you laugh and call me old-fashioned if I asked for a slow dance or two, Just once ‘round the floor, I won’t ask for more, It’s my one chance to get close to you. (Chorus) Now they tell me that times are getting better, But why’d they have to say it so fast and loud? I’d like to picture us together, but nowadays I guess romance ain’t allowed Chorus: And I still like to make love in 3/4 time, when I hear a waltz it sets me free, I still like to make love in 3/4 time, so please save a slow one for me. Yes, please save a slow one, I sure hope the band know one, Please save a slow one for me.

Sometimes he wonders if it’s been worth the wait, He ain’t had a hit now since 1968, He does all the old ones, the ones that they all know, And he hopes the disappointment doesn’t show. He’s got a real good band that plays behind him in the bar, None of them were born the year he first became a star, He does the same show every night, he’s done it now for years, And he’ll do your request for a beer Chorus: And if you take the trouble, he can still be found, He still packs them in at the Tropicana Lounge, And if you stay up late enough you’ll see he’s still alive, On late night TV for $19.95 Sometimes he wonders how his fans could age so fast, He’s a living Vegematic and a relic from the past, He’s packaged up with 50 other ghosts you’ve heard before, And this record’s not sold in any store. Chorus: If you take the trouble, he can still be found, He still packs them in at the Tropicana Lounge, And if you stay up late enough you’ll see he’s still alive, On late night TV for $19.95

You've sung so many lies in your sad songs, Till the lies have a life of their own Now the lines in your face tell of being alone One more singing cowboy's coming home. I never heard you singing on the jukebox; The radio don't play your kind of song There's another smoky bar at the end of the line One more singing cowboy's come home. Break: He never found the key to fame or fortune, Well, it seems so easy for the chosen kind Nobody ever said it's because you never tried Now it's looking like you're runnin' out of time Now there's one old drunk sleeping in the corner; You try to get your agent on the phone He knows another town where they might want you One more singing cowboy's going home Yeah one more singing cowboy's going home.

Now you say that you're trying to forget me And it looks like it won't take you very long Just another day or two and you'll be over me But I'd kinda wish you'd wait until I'm gone. I saw you yesterday with your new love And next to me he looked so young and strong Seeing him made me feel old and in the way And I kinda wish you'd wait until I'm gone. Bridge Now I'm standing in the shadows Of a love that used to be Trying to get used to being Just a memory Well, it hurts when love so sweet dies young That used to be so dear Won't you kindly wait till I'm not here Oh, but I guess your mind's made up, There's no use talking And my mind's getting close to moving on So won't you try to be a little patient, dear Just another day or two and I'll be gone Well, I kinda wish you'd wait until I'm gone.

It's essential to survive, do your best to stay alive Today's the day she might come back again. Coffee from a dirty cup - close your eyes and drink it up Don't call around, you'll just wake up your friends. Count the days, the minutes too, there's so many things to do You could fall apart, if you just had the time. Sit around and stare at the wall, wonder if she's gonna call This could be the day you lose your mind. Day old beer and cigarettes; moments that you can't forget... This might be the day - but then again Seems so much like all the rest, got to put you to the test Today's the day that all the pain could end. Bridge You're afraid to keep on hoping, it hurts so when you're wrong This could be the day you change your mind The day she walked away she said it was forever How can lovers treat their lovers so unkind? Week of dishes in the sink, grit your teeth, try not to think Wonder if a broken man can mend Guess there's just no way to know... hope's eternal even so Today's the day she might come back again Today's the day she might come back again.

White bucks, flattops, that old gang of mine I wish I could go back to 1959 It's only I'm lonely, missing all the things I used to do It's true Now here I am, I got those long-gone rock 'n roll blues. New age, heavy metal, punk and soul Lord, whatever happened to just plain rock 'n roll? I'd love to find out what happened to Donna and Peggy Sue Hey what's the news? You know it ain't easy with the long-gone rock 'n roll blues. Bridge Well, take me back to Memphis, Lord you know I want to go Just like that yellow sun, my heart is goin' down slow... In these modern days I feel so out of place, The kids all look at me like I'm from outer space It was great but it's late, and I can't find my blue suede shoes I paid my dues High and dry with the long-gone rock 'n roll blues Well, here I am, I got the long-gone rock 'n roll blues.

about

Dusty's second album has been described as a country boy's "Night Moves". An album for all the "boomers" out there (and anyone else who likes good country).
There's a taste of humourous 50s rock in Too Old To Boogie, plus fast shuffles, Canadiana (On My Way Again), pure honky-tonk country, and the obligatory country weeper. Listen for flavours of Faron Young and Willie Nelson.
(Album trivia: the man on the album cover is Mrs. Dusty's great-great grandfather.)
