The Sound Of Lonesome

by Dusty Woods

/
1.
I know the sound my heart makes when it’s breaking - It sounds just like when you walked out the door, Your voice in the darkness softly saying, I love you but I just can’t stay no more. I thought I had a love that I could count on, But nowadays I just can’t count that low, Now all I do is sit alone repeating The reasons why you said you had to go. Refrain: I’ve never heard the lonesome sound of a cryin’ whippoorwill, Or a freight-train hobo bound for New Orleans. But I know the sound my heart makes when it’s beating all alone, I know what the sound of lonesome means, Yeah I know what the sound of lonesome means. How long does it take to go crazy? Well, how long is it since we’ve been apart? Now the lonesomest sound in all creation Is the echo of a single broken heart. (Refrain)
2.
She was the only love you've ever known, And that’s why it hurts to wake up and find that you’re alone, You loved her then you lost her, now it’s through, And you know there’s only one thing you can do. Refrain: Well, sing the blues, country boy, a song about being alone, All about trembling fingers that keep reaching for the phone, I know it hurts to lose her, she was your pride and joy, Come on sing the blues, country boy. Another love has made her heart grow cold, And she left you in the shadows, feeling tired and old. It’s always hard to take it when you find That you’re just another memory left behind. Refrain: So sing the blues, country boy, a song about being alone, All about trembling fingers that keep reaching for the phone, I know it hurts to lose her, she was your pride and joy, Come on sing the blues, country boy. Well now, come on sing those blues, country boy.
3.
This morning I looked in the mirror Just to see how I’d look without you, Now holding on to a love that’s gone That’s the best thing that I’ll never do. Refrain That’s the best thing that I’ll never do, How can I just go on without you, 'Cause packin’ up, givin’ up and sayin’ that we’re through, That’s the best thing that I’ll never do. All my friends say I should try to forget you, Find comfort in a love warm and new, Makin’ a start with someone else in my heart That’s the best thing that I’ll never do. Refrain That’s the best thing that I’ll never do, How can I just go on without you, 'Cause packin’ up, givin’ up and sayin’ that we’re through, That’s the best thing that I’ll never do. That's the best thing that I'll never do.

Grey-eyed woman with the golden hair's getting’ close to me, It feels like she’s takin’ me where I’m supposed to be, Wants to try to settle me down, now I’m learning to be true, Grey-eyed woman, I love you. She’s the kind who says she wants a wedding ring, Home and yard, dogs and kids, all those settled things, I thought I was the kind who’d ramble till my life was through, Grey-eyed woman, I love you All my ramblin’ friends say I’m crazy but I don’t care, I’m in love with the grey-eyed woman with the golden hair, She’s the reason for my life and all the things I do, Grey-eyed woman, I love you Grey-eyed woman, I love you
5.
Refrain: This time I almost made it all the way out the door, Some day I swear I’m gonna leave you, next time for sure. I’ve heard the rumors about your running 'round, They say you’ve had adventures on the cheatin’ side of town, If I were you I know I’d feel ashamed, The whole town’s talkin’ about you and what’s-his-name. (Refrain) I see them laughin’ when I walk by with you, I don’t wanna believe it, but I guess it might be true, Well, you must think I’m just your lovesick clown, Our love’s becoming the gossip of the town. Refrain This time I almost made it, all the way out the door, Some day I swear I’m gonna leave you, next time for sure. I know I've said it every time before, but next time for sure.

I Understand 04:02
Trapped in the spotlight, tomorrow’s just another stage, 20 years gone, the road goes on, a man starts to feel his age, Neon bars and fancy cars, life with a country band, Feel a little chill, you take another pill, and I think I understand. Some were born for drifters, movin’ across this land, Fool yourself and everybody else into thinking that you give a damn, Late at night when you can’t get right, starin’ at a tremblin’ hand, Where there ain’t no love, God above... and I think I understand. Refrain: I understand, I understand Livin’ this way can get to a man, He’ll do anything he can And I think I understand. Then one night in a honky-tonk it all comes back on you, You start to come down, it’s just another town, you don’t know what to do, Cause they’ll love you for just an hour, then forget you as fast as they can, Nothing to do, keep moaning the blues - and I think I understand. Refrain: I understand, I understand, When the curtain falls, there’s nothing at all, Well, that’s what kills a man, Great God, I think I understand I think I understand...
7.
Gather round and listen, 'cause I've got a tale to tell It's all about a lonely man, I'm sure you know it well, He's here, he walks among you, though you might never know, His pride won't let him let the teardrops show. Break: He gambled all and lost it all, and wound up all alone He never thought this barroom would become his second home Now he needs a song to tell him how love can be so cruel, There stands the jukebox, here stands a fool I wish that I could tell you how my story ends, How the fool finds a brand new love and how his poor heart mends, But the story's far from over, it just goes on and on, He's here tonight but the one he loves' still gone. Break: It's not a happy ending, ah but that's the way it goes How many other broken hearts are here, God only knows So spend those quarters, play those songs, 'cause here the heartaches rule, There stands the jukebox, here stands a fool There stands the jukebox, here stands a fool.
8.
Well hello there, my old friend, It’s so good to hear from you again, Hope life’s treating you kind, But as for me and mine, well Nothing’s changed. I’m still here and she’s still gone, You know, love comes and goes but the blues stay on and on, Well, that’s the word, at least that’s what I’ve heard, You know, nothing’s changed. Bridge: When I’m down, the blues come around, Just to keep me company. Well, I’ve heard everything has to end, But you know, the blues are my faithful friends, How lucky can one man be? Well, it’s been so nice to talk to you, But I’ve gotta go now and spend some time with my blues, You know, it was a ball, but after all, Well, nothing’s changed Well, I appreciate your call, ah, but you know after all, Nothing’s changed.
9.
Refrain: Just as long as there’s a jukebox and someone to hold her tight, She may not be gone forever, but she’s sure gone for the night, Well, just as long as she’s still happy, I’ll keep buying the wine, And we’ll drink a toast boys, to that lady who was mine. I still believe she used to love me, that was once upon a time, You know, nothing works forever when two hearts are on the line, Soon I saw the storm clouds gather, chase our sunny skies away, And now the silence of my lonely world, it lets me hear my poor heart say. Refrain: Well, just as long as there’s a jukebox and someone to hold her tight, She may not be gone forever, but she’s sure gone for the night, But just as long as she’s still happy, I’ll keep buying the wine, And we’ll drink a toast boys, to that lady who was mine. I hope a honky-tonk can mend a heart, while that old jukebox wrecks a home, You know, a bottle ain’t the best of friends, but I can’t stand to be alone, I thought that we belonged together, guess I never had a chance, But I’ll drown my pride and wish her well, 'cause there she goes for one more dance. Refrain Just as long as there’s a jukebox, and someone to hold her tight, She may not be gone forever - Lord, she’s sure gone for the night, But just as long as she’s still happy, I’ll keep on buying the wine, And we’ll drink a toast, boys, to that lady who was mine. Yeah, we’ll drink a toast, boys, to that lady who was mine.
10.
People are always askin’ cause they can’t understand, Why I turned out the way I did, what makes my kind of man, There ain’t no easy answers, Lord, I guess there never are, I always loved that country music, never thought it’d go this far, Here I am in another bar. Refrain: I’m a little bit rowdy I’m a little bit shy, A little bit of crazy look in my eye, A whole lot of country, there ain’t no doubt, That’s what I’m all about, yeah, that’s what I’m all about. Never been to the bayou country, I always wanted to go, Ever since I heard about jambalaya on my mom and daddy’s radio, I've never been on the Opry, but Lord I’ve been alone, You get this sound when the blues come around, it sure does help you moan, Bein’ on your own. (Refrain) Never meant to cause no trouble, I never started a fight, I never meant to get drunk but sometimes you know It helps me through the night, Never had no fame or fortune, never had me a home or a friend, It gets a little tight but I’ll be alright, I may break but I’ll never bend, And I’ll be back again. Refrain Well, I’m a little bit rowdy I’m a little bit shy, A little bit of crazy look in my eye, A whole lot of country, there ain’t no doubt, That’s what I’m all about, What I'm mostly about.

Baby, the rent is overdue, Landlord says in a day or two We’ll be out on the street, I guess he’s right. We’ve got no money, we can’t see a show, There’s nothing on the TV or radio, But that’s OK, we can hold each other tight – that’s right, Chorus:: 'Cause we’re dancin’ to the sound of two hearts beating, Troubles disappear, we’re lost in the feelin’, I love you, you love me, and that’s enough far as I can see, We’re dancin’ to the sound of two hearts beating. Our families didn’t like it when we said "I do", Our friends said it would only last a year or two They said it’s all wrong, we won’t get far, They said our love was a big mistake, First big trouble was gonna break Us apart, but darling here we are – yeah, here we are. Chorus:: And we’re dancin’ to the sound of two hearts beating, Troubles disappear, we’re lost in the feelin’, I love you, you love me, that’s enough far as I can see, We’re dancin’ to the sound of two hearts beating. Oh, we're dancin' to the sound of two hearts beating... Oh we're dancing, we're dancing...
12.
Refrain: We got a real thing, the kind that makes me sing A brand new, different, lovin’ you kind of song. We got a real thing, love and a golden ring, The kind of lovin' that keeps on growin’ and goin’ strong. You’re not the kind of woman most men dream about, And Lord knows, honey, I ain’t no movie star, There’s just something there makes people stop and stare, We ain’t got glamour but this is better by far, yes it is. (Refrain) You may not get whistled at walkin’ down the street, No one’s dazzled by my sexy smile, When you’re by my side my heart swells up with pride, We ain’t good-lookin’, but honey ain’t we got style. (Refrain)
