I Understand

from The Sound Of Lonesome by Dusty Woods

/

about

Stark, brooding country rock about the dark side of the country music scene. Dedicated to all Dusty's fellow pickers who didn't make it. Possibly the best song on the album.

lyrics

Trapped in the spotlight, tomorrow’s just another stage,
20 years gone, the road goes on, a man starts to feel his age,
Neon bars and fancy cars, life with a country band,
Feel a little chill, you take another pill, and I think I understand.

Some were born for drifters, movin’ across this land,
Fool yourself and everybody else into thinking that you give a damn,
Late at night when you can’t get right, starin’ at a tremblin’ hand,
Where there ain’t no love, God above... and I think I understand.

Refrain:
I understand, I understand
Livin’ this way can get to a man,
He’ll do anything he can
And I think I understand.

Then one night in a honky-tonk it all comes back on you,
You start to come down, it’s just another town, you don’t know what to do,
Cause they’ll love you for just an hour, then forget you as fast as they can,
Nothing to do, keep moaning the blues - and I think I understand.

Refrain:
I understand, I understand,
When the curtain falls, there’s nothing at all,
Well, that’s what kills a man,
Great God, I think I understand
I think I understand...
